Ballaghaderin is a market town, in the parish of Kilcolman and barony of Costello, Co. Roscommon, the head of a petty sessional division and dispensary district, in Castlereagh union and in the Protestant and Catholic dioceses of Achonry, and is the terminus of a branch from Kilfree junction on the Midland Great Western raily, 12 miles south-west from Boyle and 122 from Dublin. Petty sessions are held every other Tuesday. Here are constabulary barracks. The cathedral church of St. Nathy, for the Catholic diocese of Achonry, is a fine edifice of stone with a handsome tower and spire, erected at a cost of 7,000. Here is a convent of Charity, at which shirt and hosiery making is largely carried on; superioress, Mrs. Malone. A club and reading room are maintained in St. Mary's Hall; Rev. Michael Harte, secretary. There are two banks, the National Bank Ltd. and the Hibernian Bank Ltd. both are fine buildings. Loch Gara, about 2 miles distant, affords capital shooting and fishing. The area comprises 42 acres; the population in 1901 was 1,353. |
